IDC MarketScape vendor analysis model is designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of ICT suppliers in a given market. The research methodology utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that results in a single graphical illustration of each vendor's position within a given market. The Capabilities score measures vendor product, go-to-market and business execution in the short-term. The Strategy score measures alignment of vendor strategies with customer requirements in a three- to five-year timeframe. Vendor market share is represented by the size of the circles. Vendor year-over-year growth rate relative to the given market is indicated by a plus, neutral or minus next to the vendor name.
The IDC MarketScape invited 11 vendors to participate in the research, based on two criteria; a complete EMM suite offering that includes mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management (MAM) and mobile content management (MCM) and an estimated software revenue totaling $20 million or more.
The IDC MarketScape noted many AirWatch strengths in the report, including AirWatch's flexible deployment strategy that allows for on-premises, cloud or hybrid solutions, noting "AirWatch's cloud strategy is more mature than several of its competitors." An additional strength reported by the IDC MarketScape includes AirWatch "company relevance across rugged devices as well as BYOD." The AirWatch EMM platform allows IT to manage all devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and rugged devices from a single, unified console. The IDC MarketScape additionally noted, "customers believe that AirWatch's focus on R&D and innovation helps the company keep up with the rapid pace of change in the mobile market." AirWatch has more than 600 employees solely dedicated to research and development and offers instant support of new operating systems from mobile software providers including Apple, Android and Microsoft.
"As mobile becomes more and more intrinsically woven into the fabric of the IT infrastructure and desktop and mobile OS alignment continues, the idea that today's mobile architecture could serve as the new paradigm for managing and securing all endpoints becomes more salient," said Stacy Crook, research director for IDC's Enterprise Mobility research practice. "The value of being a leader in this space is the opportunity to help customers reduce the risk often associated with embracing innovative technology, such as mobile and cloud. AirWatch's focus on building out a robust EMM suite, combined with VMware's broader end-user computing strategy added to the company's placement as a leader."
The report also highlighted the AirWatch flagship MDM product's real-time data analytics and reporting tools that allow IT to analyze and monitor the entire fleet of devices from a single management console. AirWatch MAM was noted for its app life-cycle management that integrates with public app stores as well as SDK and app wrapping for companies to deploy internal apps. Since the close of the research, AirWatch launched AirWatch AppShield for partners and app developers to more easily take advantage of the suite of AirWatch MAM capabilities. The IDC MarketScape also highlighted the AirWatch MCM solution, AirWatch Secure Content Locker® which "enables flexible and secure content storage and sharing in a cloud, on-premise or hybrid environment," according to the report.
"The IDC report indicates that customers need a robust and comprehensive solution that consistently meets the needs of their industry, vertical, deployment size and existing infrastructure," said John Marshall, senior vice president and general manager, AirWatch by VMware. "As enterprise mobility continues to transform, AirWatch is committed to equipping customers with best-in-breed solutions. This will drive our continued leadership placement and customer adoption in enterprise mobility scenarios of all sizes of complexities."
