MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- AIP Publishing, a leading not-for-profit scholarly publisher in the physical sciences, today announced the appointment of Philippe Bouyer, Ph.D., as the Editor-in-Chief of AVS Quantum Science, the online interdisciplinary journal it is launching this year in partnership with AVS: Science and Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing (AVS). Dr. Bouyer will lead the new journal as it fills the void for a high-impact general publication covering the rapidly evolving field of quantum science (QS).
"Quantum science, which has grown way beyond its origins in condensed matter physics, atomic physics, and quantum optics, deserves a dedicated, high impact, and 'general' journal that reflects this expanded scope. I am honored that AVS and AIP Publishing selected me to guide AVS Quantum Science as it meets that need during its critical inaugural years," said Dr. Bouyer, who is taking the helm at a time when there is growing excitement around QS around the world. From the study of measurement at the smallest possible (quantized) value of physical properties to the possibility of creating and controlling tiny clusters of atoms, QS is increasingly important in every field within the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, and materials) as well as biology, computer science, and engineering. Dr. Bouyer laid out his vision for a high-impact journal that will include content formats from reviews to special topics to provide excellent subject coverage while ensuring maximum impact.
AIP Publishing's longtime partnership with AVS will play an important role in the success of the new journal. "Ultimately, the fate of AVS Quantum Science will hinge on having a large panel of high-level contributors across disciplines, and synchrony with international conferences and important scientific meetings. AIP Publishing has the reach and access within our community to enable success," said Yvonne Towse, Managing Director of AVS.
Jason Wilde, PhD., AIP Publishing's Chief Publishing Officer, said, "We are delighted to welcome Philippe Bouyer as Editor-in-Chief of AVS Quantum Science. A leading voice in QS, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will enable our new journal to build on the momentum now accelerating developments in the field. We share a common vision to create the leading interdisciplinary journal covering QS and we are excited to collaborate to make it a reality."
An active senior researcher in the field, Dr. Bouyer is currently the director of the Laboratory for Photonics, Digital and Nano Sciences at CNRS/IOGS, Université Bordeaux and Deputy Manager of the Institute d'Optique (Acquitaine branch). Additionally, he is the co-founder and consulting chief scientist of MuQuans, a precision quantum sensors company based in France. Dr. Bouyer earned his Ph.D. at the École Normale Supérieure/laboratoire Kastler Brossel, Université Paris Sud in 1994. Among his subsequent positions, he was a visiting professor in physics at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and served on the inaugural editorial boards of IOP Quantum and Springer EPJ Quantum Technology.
Dr. Wilde noted that the new journal's scope aligns well within AIP Publishing's portfolio of journals, which includes Applied Physics Letters and Journal of Applied Physics and furthers AIP Publishing's commitment to serve its scholarly societies. AVS is a member society of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and a long-time publishing partner of AIP Publishing. AIP Publishing provides a full suite of publishing services from manuscript submission to online hosting for AVS publications, which include the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology A, Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B, Biointerphases, and Surface Science Spectra. In 2017 AVS and AIP Publishing previously worked together to launch a new spectral visualization tool, eSpectra (https://espectra.aip.org).
