MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- AIP Publishing, a leading not-for-profit scholarly publisher in the physical sciences, has named Carlos F. M. Coimbra, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering and an affiliated faculty of Center for Energy Research at the University of California, San Diego, as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, an online-only interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal covering a wide range of areas of renewable and sustainable energy relevant to the physical science and engineering communities.
"We are delighted that Carlos Coimbra has agreed to take the helm of the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy at a time when developing renewable energy solutions is increasingly urgent. His far-reaching leadership across many disciplines makes him an ideal choice for extending the reach and impact of JRSE," said Jason Wilde, Ph.D., AIP Publishing's Chief Publishing Officer. "We would like to take this opportunity to thank P. Craig Taylor, Colorado School of Mines, and John A. Turner, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, for their excellent service as JRSE's Co-Editors-in-Chief since 2009," he continued.
Prof. Coimbra is the Chairman of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, where he also serves as a Co-Director for UC San Diego Center of Excellence in Renewable Resource Integration. Prior to coming to UC San Diego, he was the Founding Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program at the University of California, Merced, and was on the faculty at University of Hawaii-Manoa and at Drexel University. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 1998 from the University of California, Irvine.
Prof. Coimbra's current research interests are highly inter-disciplinary and include evolutionary forecasting methods, solar power generation and grid integration, atmospheric radiation, solar resourcing, solar instrumentation, and variable order methods. Funded by a wide range of federal and state agencies and research institutes, as well as by private and public- owned companies, the work of his lab is focused on developing research methods, instruments and new solutions for the integration of weather-dependent, carbon-free, renewable energy resources into the power grid. He takes the EiC position for JRSE after extensive experience on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and as a co-author of four widely adopted textbooks.
JRSE is part of AIP Publishing's portfolio of peer-reviewed journals which includes Applied Physics Letters and Journal of Applied Physics, its flagship magazine Physics Today, and Scilight, a weekly publication highlighting the most interesting new research in the physical sciences. AIP Publishing partners with 10 scholarly societies, providing the full suite of publishing services, from manuscript submission to online hosting.
