DENVER, Oct. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its long-standing support for military families and veterans, Apartment Investment and Management Company (Aimco) today launched a 21-Day Salute to Veterans - a company-wide volunteer service program spearheaded by its philanthropic arm, Aimco Cares. The Aimco Board of Directors is leading by example on the first day of the campaign by assembling care packages for disabled veterans who reside in the Colorado State Veterans Home on the former Fitzsimons army post in Aurora, Colorado.
During the next three weeks, Aimco team members from across the country will honor veterans through local community service projects including preparing food and care packages for the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation in Indianapolis; serving meals to the homeless at Martha's Table in Washington, D.C.; doing indoor and outdoor maintenance projects at Fisher House in Aurora, Colorado; lending a hand at the Greenville veterans memorial ceremony in Greenville, South Carolina; volunteering for an event to honor veterans at the Long Beach VA Hospital in Long Beach, California; assembling holiday gift packages for active duty soldiers through Operation Support Our Troops in Chicago; assisting with the coordination of the Veterans Day Parade in Denver; and making home improvements and repairs for Purple Heart Homes and the Colorado State Veterans Home, both in Aurora, CO.
"At Aimco, we are proud to honor our nation's heroes who have made countless sacrifices to ensure our freedom," said Aimco Chairman and CEO Terry Considine. "Our 21-Day Salute gives us the opportunity to serve those who have so ably and unselfishly served our country, and to give back to the families who have supported them. All men and women who wore the uniform, and those on active duty, deserve our unending gratitude."
Through its Aimco Cares program, each Aimco team member is given fifteen hours of paid time annually to apply toward a volunteer activity of their choosing. Aimco teams across the country will devote thousands of service hours this year in partnership with local veterans organizations and community nonprofits.
The annual Aimco Cares Golf Classic, sponsored by Aimco's business partners nationwide, generates proceeds which Aimco directs to two national nonprofit military support organizations - Project Sanctuary and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). In the last ten years, Aimco has contributed more than $1 million to TAPS to support its peer support and crisis intervention program for military families who are grieving the loss of a loved one in the line of duty. In the last six years, Aimco has donated $740,000 to Project Sanctuary to aid in its mission of helping military personnel reunite with their families after duty overseas and addressing the suicide and divorce rates so prevalent among that population.
