After 86 years, land originally owned by Dr. Samuel Kennedy to sell at auction
TULSA, Okla., Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Approximately 310 acres of land near downtown Tulsa – originally acquired by city pioneer Dr. Samuel Kennedy in 1927 and held by his family ever since – will finally be sold.
Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company has been retained to conduct the auction, which has been set for Monday, Oct. 21.
"By various accounts, Dr. Kennedy had a difference of opinion with the city over expansion of city utilities and streets, and he decided to not only hold onto his land, but to write into his will that it couldn't be sold until 20 years after he died. However, the family held onto this land for another half century and now wishes to make it available in tracts to allow maximum participation in the community," said Brent Wellings, Southwest manager for Schrader, with offices in Fort Worth and Tulsa.
Approximately half the land -- 160 acres -- is located at Osage Drive/43rd Street and N 25th W Avenue and will sell in eight tracts ranging in size from 10.8 to 47.9 acres. The rest -- 149.6 acres -- is approximately 3.5 miles to the south, bordered by 33rd W Avenue, West Edison Street and 41st W Avenue. It will sell in 12 tracts, ranging from 3.2 to 37.1 acres.
Most is currently open pasture and woodland, but Wellings said he expects considerable interest in much of it as development land. The tracts in the group to the north are less than a mile from Osage Casino, with frontage on the recently expanded 43rd Street. The southern tracts are directly across the street from Central High School, said Wellings.
The auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Post Oak Lodge, 5323 W. 31st Street North, Tulsa. Individuals interested in additional information may visit www.schraderauction.com or call 972-768-5165.
