According to ExecRank, the rankings are derived from two years of research and feedback from evaluation committees and top COOs that yielded an algorithm for how to rank COOs based on their performance in 24 key areas, including experience in the role, business success during tenure, significant professional achievements and industry/professional reputation. The number one area of focus for COOs in 2012 was their ability to execute on operational efficiencies that improve profit margins and return on equity.
