COLUMBUS, Ga., June 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Aflac, a leading provider of supplemental insurance and products in the U.S., has been named a 2020 honoree of The Civic 50 by Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. This marks the third consecutive year that Aflac appears on this important list as one of the Top 50 Civic-Minded Companies in America. Companies making the list are renowned for demonstrating services to their communities including employees, customers and shareholders.
"The COVID-19 pandemic and continued fight for social justice, have cast a bright light on Americans' need to focus on fairness, equality and compassion," said Aflac U.S. President Teresa L. White. "Aflac is so honored to be recognized as a member of the Civic-50, whose mission is to inspire, equip and mobilize millions of people to take action that changes the world. It is incumbent upon corporations to take the lead in demonstrating how we are truly one America, protective of each other, diverse in our backgrounds, and united in common humanitarian goals."
"Points of Light believes that now more than ever, companies must drive transformative social change around the world," said Natalye Paquin, president and CEO, Points of Light. We thank Aflac for their investment, and look forward to supporting them in innovating and expanding this work."
Aflac's commitment to helping communities has only heightened in 2020. The company recently donated $5 million to two organizations that are providing assistance for health care workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 global pandemic. An additional donation of $1 million has been provided to the Crisis Text Line, an organization that assists people who are experiencing emotional or mental anguish by putting them in touch with trained counselors via text messaging.
Aflac also provided more than $6 million in cash grants and contributions for its community engagement program, while employees donated more than 16,000 hours as part of is Doing Good/Giving Back program. Every year, Aflac invests $3 million for its ongoing My Special Aflac Duck® program, a comforting robotic companion for children with cancer. To date, Aflac has delivered nearly 8,000 robotic ducks to children battling cancer across the U.S. In addition, Aflac independent sales agents, employees and the Aflac Foundation, Inc., contribute more than $9 million annually to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Service of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, with total giving exceeding $144 million since 1995. Specifically, in 2020, a $1.5 million donation was provided for Sickle Cell research and treatment. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is the largest provider of care to children with Sickle Cell in the U.S.
In addition to appearing on the Civic 50 list, Aflac scored No.1 overall in the Integration category, which Points of Light describes as how a company's U.S. community engagement program supports business interests and integrates into business functions, or how it "does well by doing good."
"Research shows companies that authentically care and act often outperform the competition, which is great news for civic-minded companies. The events of 2020 accentuate the role that we all must play, whether a small business, an individual, or a Fortune 500 company, in actively creating change. We can and must do better, and I am confident that this critical message to American business and industry is resonating," said Aflac Senior Vice President, Chief Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Communications Officer Catherine Hernandez-Blades.
The Civic 50 survey is administered by True Impact, a company specializing in helping organizations maximize and measure social and business value. The survey instrument consists of quantitative and multiple-choice questions that inform The Civic 50 scoring process. According to Points of Light, the Civic 50 is the only survey and ranking system that exclusively measures corporate involvement in communities.
