Afghan Sentenced to Prison on Child Pornography Charge

WASHINGTON, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On April 29, 2011, Abdul Ghaffar Adib was found guilty and sentenced to 1 1/2 years in prison by a local Afghan court after child pornography was found on his work computer. Adib, who was an employee of DAI, (formerly known as Development Alternative Initiatives) worked on a project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID Office of Inspector General (OIG) initiated an investigation after receiving a report from DAI concerning Adib using his work computer to view child pornography. A U.S. federal search warrant was executed on Adib's computer and an OIG forensic examiner found clips of child pornography on that computer. Adib's employment with DAI was terminated and he was arrested by Afghan authorities on January 29, 2011.

The case was prosecuted locally in Herat Province, Afghanistan. It was determined that Adib had violated Article 25 of the Afghan Law that addresses business items and the use of pictures for unethical behavior.

DAI, a U.S.-based corporation, has a $36-million contract with USAID to implement the Afghanistan Small and Medium Size Development program which is designed to promote small and medium size businesses in Afghanistan.
