WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement:
"With hours left before the Department of Homeland Security runs out of funding, Congress needs to do its job and pass a bill providing full-year funding for this vital federal agency.
"More than 230,000 federal employees, including 83,000 of our own members, are on pins and needles waiting to hear whether they will be forced to stay home after today or required to go to work without a paycheck. They are the security officers keeping weapons and terrorists off airplanes, the agents guarding our borders, the Coast Guard civilians helping to protect our waterways, the law enforcement officers at our federal buildings, and the officers enforcing our immigration and customs policies.
"Kicking this can down the road for another day or another month will only add to the anxiety and stress that this funding shutdown has already caused employees. Our national security should not be compromised by further delays."
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 670,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia, including more than 83,000 in the Department of Homeland Security.
