AFGE Responds to Brazen Shooting Outside of Pentagon

WASHINGTON, March 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees, today, offered sympathies to the officers wounded as a lone gunman fired numerous shots outside the entrance of the Pentagon. Following the attack, which occurred yesterday, AFGE National President John Gage released the following statement:

"While it is not clear what specifically motivated the shooter, several internet postings suggest that his attack is yet another in a wave of anti-government attacks aimed a disrupting the foundation of our democracy."

"Yesterday we were reminded again of the danger federal law enforcement officers place themselves in order to protect our nation. We are grateful that while the officers did sustain injuries they are both expected to make full recoveries. We applaud their dedication and bravery."

Two Pentagon Force Protection Agency officers, Jeffery Amos and Marvin Carraway, were wounded in the shooting. Both officers received treatment at the George Washington University Hospital for superficial wounds to the shoulder and thigh. The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, was fatally wounded by responding officers.

The American Federation of Government Employees is the nation's largest federal employee union, representing 600,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
