WASHINGTON, Oct. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Dr. Kim Schrier for election to Congress this November representing Washington's 8th Congressional District.
"Dr. Kim Schrier is running for Congress to make a difference in the lives of working people in Washington State and across the country, and we are proud to endorse her," AFGE District 11 National Vice President Gerald Swanke said.
"As a practicing physician, Dr. Schrier not only wants to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid but expand these programs to provide all Americans with health care and retirement security. She will fight to fully fund and staff VA medical facilities so veterans can receive integrated care for their unique needs," Swanke said.
"Dr. Schrier opposes efforts to cut federal workers' wages, benefits, and jobs, and she supports providing all workers with livable wages so they can provide for their families."
More than 75,500 federal employees live in Washington State – supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time. There are more than 53,000 current and retired federal workers in the 8th Congressional District.
"The way we spend our money says a lot about our values as a nation, and I can tell you that the wrong way to spend our money is by giving away $6.2 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations while balancing the budget on the backs of federal workers who have dedicated their lives to public service," Dr. Schrier said.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 11 represents more than 54,000 federal employees in Alaska, Colorado, Guam, Idaho, Montana, Okinawa, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
