WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the American Federation of Government Employees announced its endorsement of Lauren Baer for election this November to the U.S. House representing Florida's 18th Congressional District.
"We are thrilled to announce our support of Lauren Baer because we know she stands for workers and believes in public service," said AFGE National-Secretary Treasurer and former District 5 National Vice President Everett Kelley. "As a native Floridian, Lauren knows exactly what her constituents need, and will fight for them in Congress."
"From her staunch support for federal employees' pay and benefits, to ensuring our agencies are fully-funded and operational, Lauren is exactly the kind of person we need in Congress," said Kelley. "We're so excited for her to win this fall so she can fight to protect our environment, our rights at work, and the outsourcing of public servants' jobs."
More than 79,000 federal workers and retirees live in Florida – more than 19,000 of whom live in the 18th district – supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
"It is against America's core values to deny retirement benefits to federal employees who have paid into the system for years," said Baer. "These proposals put an undue burden on those who have dedicated their lives to working for the federal government - they should not have to pay the price of the federal deficit."
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 5 has more than 50,000 dues-paying members in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
