WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the American Federation of Government Employees announced its endorsement of J.D. Scholten for election this November to the U.S. House representing Iowa's 4th Congressional District.
"Next week the working people of Iowa can make a real difference in the future of this country, labor, and our government – and we hope they act in their best interests by voting for J.D. Scholten as their next Congressman," said AFGE District 8 National Vice President Gregg James. "We're proud to announce our support of J.D. today because he stands with all working Iowans and will be a friend to federal workers in Washington."
"From his support of a fully-funded Social Security Administration and VA to his unwavering belief in the importance of unions of working people, J.D. is just the kind of leader we need in Congress," said James. "He will stand up to the administration and special interest groups looking to profit off of the American taxpayer, and we can't wait for him to get to D.C."
Nearly 9,000 federal workers live in Iowa – with more than 8,000 workers and retirees in the 4th district – supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
"Federal employees play a critical role here in Iowa's 4th Congressional district, whether it be making sure our meat is safe for consumers, policing our communities to be safe from crime, or providing critical health care services for the sick," said Scholten. "They deserve our appreciation and thanks for all that they do in the public interest. Our Governor and state legislature made a grave mistake in undermining the right to collectively bargain and in D.C., anti-labor sentiment has further weakened the rights of our public servants. In Congress, I'm going to make sure our federal employees are treated the way they should be."
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 8 has more than 10,000 dues-paying members in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
