WASHINGTON, Aug. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the American Federation of Government Employees announced its endorsement of Abby Finkenauer of Iowa for the U.S. House of Representatives for Iowa's 1st District.
"As a current Iowa State Representative, Abby Finkenauer has demonstrated excellent leadership and judgment, and we're thrilled to announce our endorsement of her in the race to represent Iowa's 1st district in Congress," said AFGE District 8 National Vice President Gregg James. "Abby is an ardent supporter of federal workers and Iowans alike, and we know she will be the advocate we need in Washington," he added.
"While some in Congress want to rob federal workers of benefits they've earned to correct past budgeting mistakes, we know that Abby will fight to protect public servants and oppose the President's disastrous budget proposals," said James. "She will work to ensure we stop privatizing federal programs and jobs, will fight for more transparency in government, and will stand up for working peoples' rights on the job," he added.
Nearly 18,000 federal workers live in Iowa – more than 6,000 of whom reside in the 1st district – supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.
"I am honored to have the support of the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union representing employees in nearly every federal department and agency," said Finkenauer. "In Congress I will always fight for a union's right to organize and bargain for fair wages, and I will work to protect the retirement benefits our workers have earned."
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 8 has more than 10,000 dues-paying members in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
