Affirmed Housing Opens Permanent Supportive Housing for Veterans in San Diego
Housing and On-Site Services Offer Comprehensive Approach to Ending Homelessness
SAN DIEGO, May 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at 11am, Affirmed Housing will celebrate the grand opening of Zephyr, a permanent supportive housing development for homeless veterans. Located at 4380 Alvarado Canyon Road in San Diego, the project transformed a former Motel 6 into a modern apartment community for 84 extremely low income and homeless veterans. Zephyr responds to two important regional initiatives: The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC)'s Housing First – SDHC's Homelessness Action Plan, and the Mayor's Housing Our Heroes – The 1,000 Homeless Veterans Initiative. The attractive development, which has already positively impacted the neighborhood and environment, provides a comprehensive approach to ending homelessness with on-site social services and ample amenities.
Zephyr's ribbon cutting ceremony will bring together over 100 elected officials, project partners, residents, and community members for a speaking program, site tours, and lunch. A few of the speakers include:
- Councilman Scott Sherman, City of San Diego
- Keith Boylan, Deputy Secretary, California Department of Veteran Affairs
- Richard Gentry, President, San Diego Housing Commission
- James Silverwood, President, Affirmed Housing
- Jonathan Castillo, Regional Director, PATH
Zephyr features 84 studio apartments for veterans earning 30–40 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). In addition to new building systems and enhancements for aesthetics, accessibility, and sustainability, the unit interiors received updated bathrooms and new flooring, walls, and kitchenettes. Residents will also enjoy a shared TV lounge, computer room, full kitchen, and multi-purpose meeting rooms. Social services and case management services are provided on-site for residents by PATH (People Assisting the Homeless). Zephyr is funded by the State of California's Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention Program (VHHP), and SDHC for $3 million and 84 project-based vouchers. The remainder of the project funding was provided from federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.
James Silverwood, President of Affirmed Housing, states, "This development is ingenuity at its finest and a wonderful display of a successful partnership between public and private organizations. Our company is proud of the product produced and even more proud to have created housing for those who deserve more from us, our veterans."
