FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The facts speak for themselves. A study by the National Math + Science Initiative, a public-private partnership, revealed that in 2013, only 44 percent of U.S. high school graduates were prepared enough to take college-level math courses, and only 36 percent were prepared for a college-level science curriculum.
The AFCEA Educational Foundation is helping address this problem through scholarships and grants; annually, the foundation awards $2 million. In addition, many of AFCEA's 135 chapters provide scholarships, grants and tuition assistance to students and teachers in their local areas.
Recently, more than 90 students and teachers who are focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in their studies and their professions received scholarships. Awards were presented in several categories, including intelligence and cyber, and winners are specializing in fields such as electrical engineering, computer information systems and computer science. Teacher scholarships were presented to individuals who are or will be preparing the next generation of STEM specialists.
In additional to individual AFCEA chapter scholarship support, several organizations sponsor scholarships. Among the current supporters are Google; Verizon Terramark; ManTech; American Systems Inc.; Booz Allen and Hamilton; and the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
Additional information about scholarship opportunities and application deadlines for STEM students and teachers is available online.
The AFCEA Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational incentives, opportunities and assistance for people engaged in the STEM disciplines supporting the defense, intelligence and homeland security communities.
The Educational Foundation invests 85 percent of its resources on program-related activities. To support STEM students and teachers, organizations and individuals can donate online.
