Aerojet Earns Energy Efficiency Incentives for Its Ultraviolet Technology Project
SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, today was recognized by Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) for the company's installation of a more energy-efficient ultraviolet (UV) treatment system in one of its environmental groundwater remediation facilities.
Existing equipment was projected to consume 270kW of power to treat the design flow to discharge standards. Following the installation of the more efficient UV system in Oct. 2010, the Groundwater Extraction and Treatment (GET) facility's energy usage has dropped from 270 kilowatts per hour to 120 kilowatts per hour, resulting in a savings of 150 kilowatts per hour (more than 1,000,000 kWh per year). The amount of energy saved at the facility in just two days equals the amount of energy used by the average California household in one year.
Aerojet estimates that the system will result in an approximate annual savings of $120,000 in energy costs. SMUD also provided an incentive of $119,171 to support the installation of the more efficient UV system.
"We continually strive to reduce Aerojet's GET facility ancillary impacts on the environment, including energy consumption, while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its remediation technologies," said Chris Fennessy, Aerojet's site remediation engineering manager responsible for the evaluation and operation of the UV system. "SMUD is a valuable partner in these efforts and we are honored to receive this recognition."
"Aerojet continues to demonstrate its leadership in energy efficiency and sustainability with the improvements it has made to the UV treatment process," said SMUD Principal Energy Advisor, John Brain. "This project joins a long list of Aerojet's many achievements in environmental stewardship that include the installation of two major solar renewable generation projects, facility-wide energy efficiency lighting upgrades, numerous improvements to building cooling and heating systems and participation in SMUD's Voluntary Emergency Curtailment Program. SMUD is very appreciative of the ongoing opportunity to partner with and assist Aerojet in its efforts to improve the overall efficiency of their facility and sustainable manufacturing processes."
