ADVISORY: Fattah to Speak at Annual Staglin Scientific Symposium on Brain Health
The Congressman will highlight the efforts of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative during the 20th annual event in Northern California
WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, will deliver remarks this Saturday, September 13, at the 20th Annual Music Festival for Brain Health in Rutherford, California. The event, hosted by the IMHRO, ONEMIND for Research, and the Tug McGraw Foundation, features a day-long scientific symposium with leading brain researchers and scientists from across the country.
In his remarks, Fattah will discuss the federal government's role in advancing neuroscience exploration and provide an update on the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative's current efforts to elevate brain research as a national priority and increase America's investment in neuroscience.
The symposium will feature keynote presentations from Dr. Eric Lander, founding director of The Broad Institute at MIT and a principal leader of the Human Genome project, as well as the recipients of the 2014 IMHRO Rising Star Scientist Awards.
The Music Festival for Brain Health was created by Staglin family twenty years ago and is one of the nation's most important mental health fundraisers. Alongside their partner organization, One Mind Institute (IMHRO) the festival has raised more than $175 million for brain research and changed thousands of lives.
Earlier this week, Fattah furthered his efforts to expand the country's commitment to international neuroscience collaboration in a meeting with the head of the World Dementia Council. He also met with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and autism activist Ron Suskind to discuss his Autism Affinities Project. A partner of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, Suskind's foundation is working to develop transformative neurotechnology that would benefit the autism community.
Since its founding three years ago, the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative has worked to achieve groundbreaking progress in understanding the human brain. Through FNI and his role as lead Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS), Fattah has been successful in securing increased federal funding for neuroscience as a means of discovering breakthrough treatments and cures for brain related diseases and disorders, including stroke, autism, Alzheimer's, and other dementias. FNI is also focused on creating partnerships and collaborations, both within the United States and abroad, to expand the scope of research, tools, support, and funding dedicated to the study of the human brain.
