SAN FRANCISCO and SAN DIEGO, April 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS) was selected to design, build and operate a 16 MWh distributed energy storage project for San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) announced yesterday. AMS was among three companies chosen to build, own and operate distributed battery storage facilities in targeted areas of the grid to enhance reliability and help SDG&E achieve its clean energy and carbon emission targets.
"AMS is proud to be part of building a cleaner, smarter electric grid," said Susan Kennedy, CEO of AMS. "SDG&E was the first major utility to meet California's goal of delivering 33 percent of energy from renewable sources, and is aggressively fueling adoption of electric vehicles. Distributed energy storage will help SDG&E balance the grid and protect ratepayers as demand for clean energy technologies continues to increase."
The 4 MW/16MWh advanced lithium ion energy storage system will be built in San Juan Capistrano for operation beginning in 2019. The batteries will be used to help SDG&E meet reliability needs in a region impacted by the shut-down of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). The project will provide distribution system benefits, including Resource Adequacy, charging energy capacity, discharging energy capacity and, with a response time of less than 10 seconds, will be capable of providing a full range of Ancillary Services, including spinning and non-spinning reserves, regulation up, regulation down, voltage support and reactive power.
SDG&E, Southern California Edison (SCE) and other utilities are pursuing clean energy resources to replace capacity from SONGS in Southern California. AMS is currently building 300MWh of distributed energy storage projects in the West Los Angeles Basin for Southern California Edison's grid modernization initiative.
