FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Adm. James G. Stavridis, USN (Ret.), has joined SIGNAL Media as a monthly columnist in SIGNAL Magazine. As author of the "Incoming" column, Adm. Stavridis will be offering his insights into the critical topics that militaries and governments face today. His first column, featured in the January issue of SIGNAL, takes on the hottest issue in light of the hack into Sony Pictures' systems: cybersecurity.
"The digital domain facilitates operational maneuver in a manner that obfuscates and actor's identity, affiliation and tactics," the admiral states in his first column. "But unlike sea, air and land, much of cyberspace's doctrine remains undefined, to include even the most fundamental of terms. We do not even have an agreed-upon definition of what constitutes an attack in cyberspace—and it is high time we did."
Adm. Stavridis, currently the dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts University, served as Supreme Allied Commander, NATO, and commander of the U.S. European Command from 2009 to 2013. From 2006 to 2009, the admiral commanded U.S. Southern Command. In addition to serving as the senior military assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Defense and Secretary of the Navy, Adm. Stavridis was the first commander of the Navy's Deep Blue strategic and tactical think tank after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
"Each year, the 'Incoming' column is authored by a distinguished individual who offers vital—even disruptive—perspectives on vital issues of the day," says Robert K. Ackerman, editor in chief of SIGNAL Magazine and senior director of SIGNAL Media. "We are privileged to have Adm. Stavridis bringing his broad expertise on a wide range of topics to SIGNAL each month throughout 2015."
