ADL Congratulates Associated Students of UC Berkeley (ASUC) Senators for Standing Firm Against Factious Anti-Israel Divestment Resolution
SAN FRANCISCO, April 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) commends the ASUC Senators for upholding the veto of Senate Bill 118a, "A Bill in Support of UC DIVESTMENT FROM WAR CRIMES."
This resolution that split apart so many on campus -- and received national and international attention -- was of great concern to many in the Jewish community. Contrary to its generalized title, the bill singled out Israel for condemnation and isolation. It was divisive and had the potential to make Jewish members of the campus community deeply uncomfortable.
ADL worked with our community partners, especially Hillel at UC Berkeley as well as Jewish and non-Jewish UC Berkeley students, to counter and challenge the resolution. We congratulate their courage and leadership.
Nina Simone Grotch, Interim Regional Director explains, "ADL believes that the defeat of this harmful and ill-conceived bill is proof that fairness, integrity, and level-headed thinking won the day at UC Berkeley. We congratulate all the student leaders who firmly voiced our mutual concern that this bill was divisive and counterproductive to the critical goals of peace, dialogue, understanding and reconciliation."
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
