ADL Condemns Vandalism of Mosque in Chantilly, Va.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Anti-Defamation League condemned the serious vandalism of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Mosque in Chantilly, VA and called on law enforcement to investigate the possibility of bias motivation in the crime. The Community Mosque, which was still under construction, endured property destruction late Sunday, January 29, and news reports indicate that all of the windows, the door windows and stucco walls were broken and damages are estimated to exceed $60,000.
"Whenever a religious institution is targeted in this way, the possibility of a bias motivation must be considered," said Sophie Dornstreich, the Anti-Defamation League's Washington, D.C. Associate Regional Director. "The desecration of a house of worship can create an environment of vulnerability and fear throughout the entire community and we stand with the Ahmadiyya Mosque community at this time."
ADL commended the Fairfax County Police Department for their swift response to the incident and the FBI's prompt involvement in the investigation. The League urges law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident as a possible hate crime.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
