ADL Applauds Supreme Court Refusal to Review DC Same-Sex Marriage Law
WASHINGTON, Jan. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the United States Supreme Court's refusal to review Washington, D.C.'s same-sex marriage law. In March, 2010, the District of Columbia became the sixth jurisdiction to permit same-sex couples to marry.
"We welcome the Court's action to uphold the rights of residents and the elected leaders of the District of Columbia to make their own policy choices – including the decision to provide the same civil marriage benefits for all couples living in the District," said David Friedman, ADL Washington, DC Regional Director. "No one should be discriminated against on the basis of who they are or who they love."
ADL has been an outspoken supporter of the rights of gays and lesbians. The League has both supported state efforts to enact same-sex marriage laws and filed briefs urging federal and state courts to uphold these laws.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
