ADL Applauds Arrest in Olney, MD Synagogue Vandalism Case
WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) denounced the reported vandalism of B'nai Shalom Synagogue, and applauded the arrest of a suspect this week. B'nai Shalom Synagogue and its property were reportedly vandalized on July 25th or early July 26th with hate filled spray-painted messages such as "Seig Hitler" and "Death 2 Zionists." The alleged perpetrator, a vocal Neo-Nazi named Ian Baron, denies his involvement with the crime.
"We condemn this heinous attack on the local Jewish community, and we commend the Montgomery County Police Department for their diligence in investigating this hate crime," said Sophie Dornstreich, Assistant Regional Director. "This arrest should send a resounding message that any hate crime is intolerable, and that those who commit them will face serious consequences. We want the community to know that we stand in solidarity with them."
Hate crime statutes have been adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia. Many of those laws are based on a model statute crafted by ADL, which has long been in the forefront of national and state efforts to deter and counteract hate-motivated criminal activity.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
