Adaptive Reuse: U-Haul Opens Telegraph Road Store in Detroit
DETROIT, July 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul is putting its adaptive reuse practices to work to convert an abandoned Kmart® Super Center at 19990 Telegraph Road into a full-service moving and self-storage facility.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Telegraph Road opened a temporary showroom on April 1 and has been offering truck and trailer rentals, self-storage, moving supplies and boxes, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers, towing equipment, professional hitch installation and more.
The 15.23-acre property sat vacant for three years prior to U-Haul Company's acquisition, which was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
The store currently offers 36 outdoor drive-up units for self-storage. When renovations are done in 2017, U-Haul customers will have access to an additional 526 indoor heated units, 665 indoor climate-controlled units and a propane-dispensing pump.
"This community will have easy access to more than 1,200 self-storage units to meet its needs," U-Haul Company of Detroit president David Ruff explained. "The facility fills the void left by a smaller U-Haul store that was no longer able to support the demand of the area.
"Our adaptive reuse of existing structures like this one is not only environmentally friendly, but it's economically friendly because it brings local jobs and needed services to Detroit."

Randolph noted that the 142,532-square-foot store will eventually put up to 12 part- and full-time Team Members to work once construction is completed.
"This new facility will bring opportunities for current U-Haul Team Members, for those seeking employment, and for our customers," Randolph said. "I am excited to see this old Kmart become a U-Haul store. I am confident it will make this a more beautiful area."
