SAN DIEGO and CARMEL, Ind., Feb. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Silver&Fit® Exercise and Healthy Aging Program for Medicare-eligible members has expanded its range of Silver&Fit endorsed group fitness classes to include the unique "ActivMotion for Active Aging™" fitness classes. All Silver&Fit endorsed group classes offered at contracted locations are available at no additional cost to members.
The ActivMotion for Active Aging class is specially-designed for older adults to improve upper body and core strength, as well as balance. The classes use a balance device called the ActivMotion Bar®, a hollowed-out steel bar filled with ball bearings that shift back and forth when moved. Unlike other stabilizing tools, such as balance balls, the ActivMotion Bar is designed so that the shifting interior steel balls provide greater resistance as participants move through basic exercises, including curls and lunges. An independent research study by the University of Michigan identified that basic exercises with the ActivMotion Bar significantly outperformed other standard fitness tools in activating core muscles and therefore burning calories. Participants can select from lightweight four- and-a-half pound bars to more challenging 18-pound bars.
The Silver&Fit Program has over 13,000 participating fitness centers and YMCAs nationwide. A number of U.S. fitness chains have incorporated the ActivMotion Bar and its innovative programs into many of their facilities for individual and group training for all levels of fitness clients. Silver&Fit members should inquire at their fitness center or YMCA to determine if classes will be offered there.
"We're excited to offer our members access to the ActivMotion classes," said Brett Hanson, vice president, Fitness Network Management at American Specialty Health Fitness. "The Silver&Fit program continues to grow and expand our range of new, exciting and challenging fitness opportunities for our members of all ages, including baby-boomers."
Silver&Fit instructors seeking training opportunities for ActivMotion Bar classes can learn more about the program and certification at the ActivMotion Bar website (www.activmotionbar.com).
"We are proud to be partnering with Silver&Fit to bring our innovative ActivMotion Bars and programs to their members," said Derek Mikulski, founder of ActivMotion Bar and internationally-recognized fitness trainer. "Our ActivMotion for Active Aging program will prove uniquely effective for improving the balance, core strength and mental acuity of members of all ages and fitness levels."
The ActivMotion Bar has been mentioned as a top fitness training tool by Golf Digest, Oxygen, Pilates Style, Shape and Club Solutions magazines and The Wall Street Journal and LA Times.
