Achievable, Bipartisan Solution Needed for TSCA Reform

Public Confidence in Chemical Industry Is a High Priority

WASHINGTON, April 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Amid renewed debate over how to best modernize the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) today reiterated its call on Congress for an achievable, bipartisan solution.

"Most stakeholders agree that TSCA can be improved," said Bill Allmond, SOCMA's Vice President of Government and Public Relations. "To be successful, legislation must strike an appropriate balance between improving the public's confidence in chemicals in commerce without hamstringing the innovation for which our industry is well known and on which the public relies," Allmond added.

SOCMA believes the public needs confidence that the products they purchase are safe for their use. Today, existing laws such as TSCA are intended to help provide an understanding of potential risks associated with chemicals in commerce. To make progress, the association believes that a higher priority needs to be placed on legislation that is capable of garnering bipartisan support.

"We need to identify those areas of TSCA reform where there is some consensus to increase the prospect that there will be support from Democrats and Republicans alike," Allmond explained. "Rather than waiting for a silver bullet to fix everything, let's find areas both sides can agree on and move them forward through bipartisan cooperation."
