CHICAGO, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) today announced that Jay Kaplan, MD, FACEP, from San Anselmo, Calif., was elected president-elect during the organization's annual meeting in Chicago. He was elected by ACEP's Council to serve a 1-year term and will assume ACEP's presidency at next year's meeting in Boston.
"Emergency physicians need resources to care for their patients and to meet any crisis, which means half of our beds can't be occupied by patients who have been admitted to the hospital but are waiting for inpatient beds," said Dr. Kaplan. "We need to show our value and re-brand the image of emergency medicine. We have become the hub of the medical system, not only providing life-saving medical care, but also acute care for everyone with sudden medical problems."
Dr. Kaplan is director of service and operational excellence for CEP America Emergency Physician Partners in Emeryville, Calif., and medical director of Studer Group. During the meeting, he announced plans to cut back on his responsibilities in order to focus on advocacy and national issues, including quality care, liability reform, graduate medical education and fair reimbursement.
Dr. Kaplan was named ACEP's Outstanding Speaker of the Year in October 2003. In 2007, Studer Group honored him with the prestigious Physician Fire Starter Award. His life work has been partnering with physicians, hospital leadership teams, medical groups, and hospital staff to provide them with tools and tactics to improve patient care and the work environment. Dr. Kaplan works with health care providers in a variety of environments to employ strategies to improve service and operational excellence.
Dr. Kaplan was elected to ACEP's Board of Directors in 2009 and 2012. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency at the University of California, Davis, Sacramento Medical Center.
ACEP is the national medical specialty society representing emergency medicine. ACEP is committed to advancing emergency care through continuing education, research and public education. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, ACEP has 53 chapters representing each state, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. A Government Services Chapter represents emergency physicians employed by military branches and other government agencies.
