AccuWeather Supports FDNY Foundation to Keep NYC Families Prepared and Safe on "Be Ready Day"
AccuWeather and FDNY Foundation join together to increase safety awareness ahead of holidays and winter weather season, encouraging communities to Be Ready in shared mission.
NEW YORK, Nov. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- AccuWeather, the global leader in weather information and digital media, proudly supports the FDNY Foundation, the non-profit organization of the New York City Fire Department dedicated to increasing public awareness and understanding of life-saving fire safety information throughout New York City communities.
With the direct tie between weather and fire safety, as home fires are at their peak during winter months when people use more heating units, AccuWeather and the FDNY Foundation have joined together to encourage the public to take easy, actionable steps to prepare.
Today the FDNY Foundation is holding "Be Ready Day" in partnership with AccuWeather, a day designated to encourage New Yorkers to prepare now for upcoming holidays and winter weather to ensure they are prepared and safe. Through increased awareness, communities are reminded of the importance of life-saving tips, safety steps, and precautions to take action. For helpful safety tips, visit www.FDNYSmart.org and www.AccuWeather.com/Ready.
"AccuWeather proudly supports the FDNY Foundation in a shared life-saving mission that will increase public awareness of fire and weather safety," said Barry Lee Myers, Chief Executive Officer at AccuWeather. "Together, by helping more people to be prepared, we will save more lives."
"The cold winter months pose many challenges for our Department, as some New Yorkers may use unsafe means to keep warm, and the harsh elements make the brave work of responding to fires and medical emergencies that much more difficult," said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. "Fire Safety Education is especially important as the temperature drops, and the efforts of the FDNY Foundation and our great friends at AccuWeather to spread these critical safety messages this winter will surely save lives."
AccuWeather's donation of $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation supports safety education, awareness, and outreach initiatives including the foundation-funded Fire Zone, a state-of-the-art fire safety learning center for teachers, parents, and kids located at Rockefeller Center, providing additional resources to make a difference.
"The FDNY Foundation is so proud to partner with AccuWeather to keep New Yorkers safe," said FDNY Foundation Chairman Stephen Ruzow. "Together, we are preparing New Yorkers for the winter season ahead, making sure they are aware of all of the hazards that the season brings, and helping to make sure they're taking the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe. Partnerships like these are so critical because they allow us to reach so many people, and we know these educational messages are saving lives across the city."
AccuWeather has also partnered with the FDNY Foundation to educate school children in a special presentation with preparedness plans, safety information tips, and more. Area students will be taken through live, interactive demonstrations at FDNY's Fire Zone to understand top causes for fires and learn how winter weather plays a contributing role. AccuWeather Network Meteorologist Laura Velasquez will participate in the school tours alongside FDNY Fire Safety Spokesperson Lt. Mancuso, sharing weather safety information and what kids can do to Be Ready.
Media representatives are invited to a special FDNY press conference today to announce "Be Ready Day" and hold press interviews: Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 10:00am EST located at FDNY Fire Zone, 34 W 51st St, New York, NY 10019. AccuWeather Chief Executive Officer Barry Lee Myers, New York Chief of Department James Leonard, FDNY Foundation Chairman Stephen Ruzow, FDNY Foundation Executive Director Jean O'Shea, and First Graders from NYC public schools in the Bronx in attendance.
