According to Hilliard Munoz Gonzales LLP, Mary Barra declines to meet with victims in DC
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- GM's CEO, Mary Barra, returns to Washington D.C. this week for another congressional hearing regarding GM's delayed recall of millions of vehicles for faulty ignition switches but declines an invitation to meet with GM victims who are also traveling to D.C. to be present for the hearing.
In a letter to Ms. Barra, Mr. Hilliard, attorney for the victims, invites GM's CEO to meet his clients:
"My clients want to meet with you in DC next week. Especially the parents who lost children. Part of healing always includes knowing your loved one is acknowledged---more so here given your company's role in their tragedy."
In an email to GM's national counsel, Kyle Dryer, Mr. Hilliard states, "These folks have lost children, spouses and parents because of GM. The level of disrespect necessary to simply continue and ignore their requests is troubling especially given Ms. Barra's public promise to meet them."
Yesterday, Ms. Barra, through her attorney and GM's national counsel Kyle Dryer, responded on her behalf and confirmed that Ms. Barra is declining the victims' invitation to meet. Including 8 year old Trenton Buzzard, paralyzed from the chest down, who was in one of GM's '13 confirmed defective vehicles'.
On Ms. Barra's behalf, Mr. Dryer stated:
- Ms. Barra does not have time to meet any victims in DC;
- Ms. Barra does not intend to schedule any meetings with victims until 'some time after' Ken Feinberg's compensation plan is 'up and running'; and
- Ms. Barra may have time to schedule meetings at an undetermined later date, but Mr. Dryer refused to provide any other specifics.
Bob Hilliard states, "Its seems clear GM lawyers are insulating Mary from the stark reality and consequences of GM's defective ignition. There is only one way to understand what her company has done, and that is to look into the sad eyes of parents and loved ones of those who have died and listen to their heartbreak."
"GM lawyers allowed this cover-up to fester and remain hidden and refused to provide truthful information to NHTSA requests during the investigation of GM accidents--requests that may have saved lives by allowing NHTSA to act sooner. Now GM lawyers are bringing the same stonewalling strategy to a simple invitation by the families of the victims to meet with Mary Barra. Shame on Ms. Barra, Shame on her lawyers and shame on GM."
