Accordia Global Health Foundation Honors Gilead Sciences, Inc. with Global Health Leadership Award

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Accordia Global Health Foundation will present its 2012 Global Health Leadership Award to Gilead Sciences, Inc., in recognition of the company's dedication to supporting African medical researchers and to fighting the HIV epidemic worldwide. Over the past 25 years, Gilead has established itself as a global leader in the field of HIV, with a focus on advancing the science of HIV prevention, developing new and improved treatments and improving access to medicines in the developing world.

Dr. Mohammed Lamorde, a researcher at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kampala, Uganda, will present the award to Gilead at Accordia's Celebration of Partnership on October 16, 2012, in San Francisco. Accordia's Celebration of Partnership is an annual gathering that recognizes the unwavering support of committed individuals and institutions working to transform the health landscape in Africa for generations to come. Dr. Lamorde is enrolled in Accordia's Sewankambo Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, a research mentorship program funded by the Gilead Foundation. The program cultivates African medical investigators with a proven research track record and provides intensive, personalized, and multi-disciplinary support to develop their skills as they become career academic researchers.

Raised in Nigeria, Dr. Lamorde completed his PhD at Trinity University in Dublin. Dr. Lamorde then became involved with a research program at IDI that aimed to optimize drug treatment of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. He has also conducted research on the effect of food on the pharmacokinetics of HIV drugs, an area he plans to continue investigating during his fellowship.
