International Standard Provides Updated Best Practices for Global Calibration and Testing Labs
NEW YORK, Dec. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With Standards Subscriptions from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), industry stakeholders can access the new edition of the international standard ISO/IEC 17025, General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and released in December 2017. ANSI is the U.S. representative to ISO, and, via the U.S. National Committee, the IEC.
ISO/IEC 17025: An Update
The new version of ISO/IEC 17025—an international reference for laboratories to carry out calibration and testing activities around the world—was developed by a committee of worldwide laboratory experts. The standard helps facilitate cooperation between laboratories and other bodies by generating wider acceptance of results between countries. A new structure has been adopted to align the standard with other existing ISO/IEC standards such as the ISO/IEC 17000 series on conformity assessment.
The ISO Committee for Conformity Assessment (CASCO) is the technical committee that developed the standard, which is relevant to universities, research centers, governments, regulators, inspection bodies, product certification organizations, and other conformity assessment bodies that perform testing, sampling, or calibration. ANSI is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator for CASCO, carrying forth U.S. positions to the international technical committee.
