Accenture Grants Local Initiatives Support Corporation US$350,000 to Equip People with Career Skills Needed in Their Communities
Award reflects Accenture's global corporate citizenship initiative, Skills to Succeed
NEW YORK, July 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Accenture and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) today announced that Accenture has awarded LISC a grant of US$350,000 to help the organization provide approximately 27,000 low-income people with career and workplace skills directly aligned to the job needs of the communities in which they live.
This grant, which will use curriculum developed by Accenture, will focus initially on training for the healthcare and IT fields. The grant also reflects the company's Skills to Succeed initiative, which aims to equip 500,000 people around the world by 2015 with the skills to get a job or build a business.
"Supporting LISC exemplifies Accenture's commitment to providing people with the skills necessary to find employment," said Michael Scimo, managing director, Human Capital & Diversity, North America, Accenture. "We share LISC's dedication to helping people gain the skills necessary to start a career and to helping communities stimulate economic development."
LISC collaborates with local development groups to help financially distressed communities overcome challenges and improve the quality of life for their residents. This grant will help LISC expand its Occupational Skills Pilot Initiative, through which LISC Financial Opportunity Centers provide local residents with skills that lead to employment. Financial Opportunity Centers are locally-based centers that provide low-income families with financial coaching, employment counseling and greater access to public benefits.
"There is a large skills gap between the residents of the communities in which we operate and the jobs available to them," said Kevin Jordan, senior vice president for national programs at LISC. "This grant will allow LISC to expand our community initiatives to help bridge the gap by skilling more people to find employment."
