ABSOLUT(R) VODKA Brings Artistic Collaborations to Life
Pop-up Artist Loft/Performance Space Opens to Showcase Evolving Exhibition Taking Place Over Thirty Days
NEW YORK, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, ABSOLUT® VODKA unveils the next wave of its creative collaborations with Thirty Days NY – a pop-up artist loft/performance space nestled in the heart of TriBeCa – where co-owners of Los Angeles' taste-making bookstore, Family (David Jacob Kramer and Sammy Harkham), will curate a bustling hive of evolving creativity and free events for the next 30 days. Family is among the stable of creative organizations with which Spike Jonze collaborated during the making of his critically acclaimed short film "I'm Here," and Thirty Days NY is a natural evolution in the film's lifecycle.
ABSOLUT partnered with these artistic luminaries and creative agency TBWA\Chiat\Day to develop the storefront at 70 Franklin Street as the "canvas" for the creative process – a living, breathing "artist's loft." The evolving installation will be inspired by the creative community and New York City, and will become art itself as artists in residence and performers collaborate with guests and the elements in the space. Complete with a fully functioning Family bookstore, an 'artists in conversation' series, live bands and performances, short film showings and audience-interactive projects, Thirty Days will harness and highlight the artistic legacy of New York before moving on to its next city. The space/store will be open from 11 am – 9 pm from April 8 – May 7.
"Putting this together has felt like an art project itself," said David Jacob Kramer of Family bookstore. "ABSOLUT has enabled us to manifest the ideas of so many different artists into a cohesive whole with an energy all of its own. It is a living thing and we're excited to see it blast forth into New York City."
Thirty Days NY marks yet another unprecedented collaboration for the spirits brand in a long line of creative partnerships dating back to the 1980s when ABSOLUT engaged pop culture icons, such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Thirty Days NY follows the launches of "NY-Z," a short film featuring JAY-Z and his love of music in New York City, and Spike Jonze's robot love story short film, "I'm Here," which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Building on the "I'm Here" collaboration, Meryl Smith, the film's prop designer, will join Thirty Days NY to construct a giant sculptural work; and Aska Matsumiya, the soundtrack composer, will spend the opening 10 days improvising with selected musical guests and recording in the public setting.
The pop-up space, the interior of which is designed by Ben Jones of the art collective Paper Rad, will play host to "King Kong" – an art exhibition from Los Angeles, featuring the network of artists that has flourished around Family, including Geoff Mcfetridge, title creator for Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are," Brian Roettinger, GRAMMY® award-winner for his design of the album artwork for indie rock group No Age, and Pablo Ferro, known for his creation of the classic title sequences on Stanley Kubrick's "Dr Strangelove" and "A Clockwork Orange."
Curated by Dallas Clayton, thirtydaysny.com will house the virtual version of the installation and allow creative enthusiasts an online window into the evolving real-world space.
