ABINGTON, Mass., Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul adaptive reuse practices have transformed a former home building materials store into a new full-service U-Haul facility for do-it-yourself movers some 20 miles south of Boston.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Abington at 403 Bedford St. began serving customers on April 1 as renovations got underway. The 8.59-acre property features five single-story buildings with a combined 91,530 square feet of space. It used to serve as a store location for Cape Cod Lumber.
"The previous store was a staple in this town and has had a lasting effect on its people," said Amanda Garcia, general manager of the new U-Haul store. "We hope to establish the same relationship with our new community. We want to be the go-to store for rental equipment and quality service."
Customers have access to U-Haul® truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment, moving supplies and RV storage and parking. By spring, the store will introduce 631 state-of-the-art storage units, including 261 climate-controlled units. Customers also can rent one of more than 200 available U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers.
"We are right across the street from Lowe's® and on the main cut through Route 18, which connects three different towns and provides access to Route 3," U-Haul Company of Southern Massachusetts and Cape Cod president Ramon Mojica said. "Cape Cod Lumber has been in Abington since 1958 and is a well-known family business. It seemed appropriate that U-Haul move into this location as we too are considered a family-run business."
The acquisition of the Abington facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
