WASHINGTON, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B), the company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has been selected to maintain two continuous current transmission lines, which will transport more than 6,000 megawatts of power generated by the hydroelectric plants on the Madeira River (Santo Antonio and Girau).
Abengoa will be responsible for maintaining these infrastructures for a period of five years, which will generate revenues of approximately €17.25 million. The lines form part of the Madeira system, which with nearly 5,000 km (2,345 km each line) will be the largest continuous current energy transmission system in the world.
The two lines, which will connect the substations in Porto Velho (RO) and Araraquara (SP), will cover more than 100 municipalities in the states of Rondonia, Mato Grosso, Goias, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo. They will also cross the Pantanal Matogrossense, an area of huge biological diversity that is difficult to access and environmentally very sensitive, as well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The features of this region represent a major challenge for maintaining these infrastructures. However, thanks to Abengoa's extensive experience in similar projects, the company can guarantee the highest levels of quality in every process.
Abengoa has already carried out other projects for Brazil's National Electricity Agency and was awarded three electricity transmission projects in May that will cover 2,920 km in a contract worth approximately €1,000 million.
This latest project will further expand Abengoa's experience of transmission lines, consolidating its leadership position in this sector in Latin America, where it has more than 20,000 km of this type of transmission projects. Furthermore, it has participated in developing nearly 10,000 km of electricity transport infrastructures in Brazil.
