AARP Illinois will hold the first-of-its kind listening session to call attention to the need for legislation that protects vulnerable residents living in nursing homes.
Dozens of families will share their stories of nursing home experiences while urging members of the Illinois House of Representatives to support the Nursing Home Quality of Care Initiative.
Approved last month by the IL Senate, the initiative calls on legislators to abide and enforce the state's minimum staffing requirements, heighten public transparency of nursing home violations, and enhance safeguards regarding a psychotropic medication and a resident's right to informed consent.
The Nursing Home Quality of Care Initiative was prompted by a Chicago Tribune/Kaiser Health News investigation, which documented the urgent need for nursing home resident protection due to understaffing.
AARP is the nation's largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering Americans 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. AARP Illinois has 1.7 million members; 250,000 in Chicago.
