AARP Idaho Launches State's Largest Voter Education Effort
Statewide Campaign Will Hit Every Legislative and Congressional District to Help 50+ Voting Powerhouse Get Facts on Key Issues
BOISE, Idaho, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On the heels of the second debate between the two candidates vying for Idaho State Governor's seat, AARP members gathered on the steps of the State Capitol this morning to launch the largest voter education effort in the state. With 56% of all votes expected to come from voters 50 and older and roughly 30% of all ballots cast coming from AARP members, AARP announced efforts to help the voting powerhouse get the facts on key issues - releasing its first-ever straight-from-the-member voter guides for every Idaho race and announcing the issues it'll focus on for Congressional races.
Over the next few weeks, AARP will hit cities and towns across Idaho to help the 50+ and the public get the facts and learn the candidates' positions on key issues before they vote. As part of the efforts, AARP also announced a new voter education website www.aarp.org/yourvote, to put information on all Idaho races at voters' fingertips and unveiled new ads that will be a part of a paid media effort. AARP members will be a force in every race in Idaho (race-by-race breakdown of members is available here: http://bit.ly/bJMJWv).
"AARP members, like most Idaho voters, have some tough issues on their minds this election season, and they are looking to the candidates to get answers before hitting the polls in November," said Jim Wordelman, State Director for AARP in Idaho. "AARP's voter guides are one tool that will help not just the 50+, but all Idaho voters become more informed about key issues."
Earlier this year, AARP went directly to its members across Idaho and asked them what issues mattered most to them this election year, their answers made up the 2010 AARP Idaho State Voter Guide. The guide asks every candidate for Governor, Lt. Governor, and State Legislature in Idaho to state their positions on key issues: the state budget; education funding; where they stand on the "conscience law" which allows health care professionals to deny living wills and advance directives; and addressing Idaho's doctor shortage.
"We'll be delivering one simple message to voters across the state: It's your decision, your right and your vote – so make sure you get the facts to make the choice that's best for you before you vote," said C.J. Pertovsky, an AARP volunteer from Eagle.
AARP voter guides for all Idaho Congressional races will be available in early October focusing on key issues: the future of Social Security, Medicare fraud, access to doctors for Medicare beneficiaries, how the candidates will help older workers get back to work.
AARP is Idaho's largest membership organization with 180,000 members.
