WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson today announced that AARP Foundation has created a relief fund to help the victims – especially those age 50 and older –as relentless rains and unprecedented flooding devastate Houston and the southeastern Texas region. AARP Foundation and AARP will match contributions, dollar for dollar, up to $1 million for the fund, which will provide relief and recovery support to victims of Hurricane Harvey.
"The devastation and loss in Houston and surrounding areas is staggering, especially when the hardest hit are those who were already struggling to make ends meet. In many cases, low-income older adults have neither the financial resources nor the ability to escape the catastrophe," said Ryerson. "AARP members respond quickly to help those in need and we know they will again. As a trusted organization we also know that every dollar counts. We will ensure that donations collected through the disaster relief fund go directly to aid victims."
Hurricane Harvey struck the coast of Texas as a massive Category 4 hurricane. But the destruction has only begun, as relentless rains and catastrophic flooding pummel Houston and other areas across southeastern Texas. The flooding will continue — and potentially worsen — throughout the week, with an estimated 13 million people under flood watches and warnings stretching from Corpus Christi to New Orleans. Once the storm finally passes, it will be days before the waters recede and people will be able to fully assess the damage and destruction to their homes and communities.
AARP Foundation is currently accepting donations through its secure website, where 100 percent of donors' tax-deductible contributions will be used to help the victims of this disaster.
