AANP Celebrates 75,000 Member Milestone
AUSTIN, Texas, March 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the largest national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners (NPs) of all specialties, today announced it has reached the milestone of 75,000 members. Since its inception as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in 1985 with 100 members and the 2013 merger with the American College of Nurse Practitioners, AANP membership has experienced steady growth.
This upward trajectory in AANP membership mirrors the increased demand for NPs in diverse health care settings nationwide. Currently, more than 222,000 NPs are licensed to practice in the United States, with approximately 20,000 NP students entering the workforce every year. This increase in NP-delivered health care continues to attract attention and gain recognition as evidenced by the number two ranking and the fourth consecutive appearance on the 2017 U.S. News and World Report list of The 100 Best Jobs.
"AANP has seen its membership grow exponentially with the increased recognition of the value of NP care," said AANP President Cindy Cooke, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP. "We are proud of the high-quality, patient-centered care that nurse practitioners provide their patients. With more than 870 million visits made to NPs in the U.S. annually, the demand for these exceptional health care providers has never been greater."
AANP provides legislative leadership at the local, state and national levels, advancing health policy; promoting excellence in practice, education and research; and establishing standards that best serve NP patients and other health care consumers. As The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner®, AANP represents the interests of NPs as providers of high-quality, cost-effective, comprehensive, patient-centered health care.
