AANP Attends White House Forum On Antiobiotic Stewardship, Supports Efforts To Slow Emergence Of Drug-Resistant Bacteria
AUSTIN, Texas, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the largest professional membership organization for nurse practitioners in the country, today joins over 150 major food companies, retailers, and human and animal health stakeholders at the White House Forum on Antibiotic Stewardship to announce commitments to implement changes over the next five years to slow the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, detect resistant strains, preserve the efficacy of our existing antibiotics, and prevent the spread of resistance infections.
"AANP is honored to be part of this important initiative that aims to address the urgent and serious threats from drug-resistant bacteria that affect people in the U.S. and around the world," said Cindy Cooke, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP, President Elect of AANP. Dr. Cooke is in attendance at today's White House Forum, representing the national nurse practitioner community.
To help the White House meet its goal of improving antibiotic prescribing and use over the next five years, AANP is committed to promoting awareness of the Antibiotic Stewardship Initiative to its members; sharing materials on how nurse practitioner can engage in antibiotic stewardship in their own practices; and providing continuing education through presentations at its annual conferences and via its Continuing Education Center.
Nurse practitioners serve as primary, acute and specialty care providers across the country. They assess, order, perform and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests; make diagnoses; initiate and manage treatment; prescribe medications and non-pharmacologic treatments; and counsel patients, their families and communities. More than 50 years of peer-reviewed, independent research has shown nurse practitioners to be safe and cost-effective clinicians with patient outcomes that are similar and sometimes better than those of physicians.
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is the largest professional membership organization for nurse practitioners (NPs) of all specialties. It represents the interests of more than 205,000 NPs, including approximately 61,000 individual members and 200 organizations, providing a unified networking platform and advocating for their role as providers of high-quality, cost-effective, comprehensive, patient-centered and personalized health care. The organization provides legislative leadership at the local, state and national levels, advancing health policy; promoting excellence in practice, education and research; and establishing standards that best serve NP patients and other health care consumers.
