AAHC Graduate Medical Education Regional Round Table Series Kicks Off
Woodruff Health Sciences Center at Emory University to host first regional round table
WASHINGTON, March 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) will kick off its regional round table series on graduate medical education (GME) reform on Thursday, March 12, in Atlanta, Georgia at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center at Emory University. The round table discussion will be chaired by S. Wright Caughman, MD, executive vice president for health affairs and CEO, Woodruff Health Sciences Center at Emory University, and Steven A. Wartman, MD, PhD, AAHC president and CEO.
"It is essential that any reform to the graduate medical education system be considered as part of a national health strategy and not in isolation," said Dr. Wartman. "Because academic health centers educate the bulk of the nation's healthcare professionals, their input is essential to any discussion on GME reform. AAHC looks forward to convening its members and local experts to gather important feedback necessary to mobilize a thorough and articulate response on this critical issue."
The round table series, developed at the request of AAHC members, will bring together GME experts from six regions across the United States, including the leadership of academic health centers as well as local stakeholders, to identify and discuss potential regional aspects and the impact of GME reform.
The group will specifically consider the current GME system in light of evolving healthcare delivery models and the desire to incentivize innovation necessary to meet future healthcare needs. While the AAHC has not taken a position on GME reform per se, the Association believes that any reform of the GME system must be considered as part of a national health strategy that will play an increasingly important role in care delivery in the 21st century.
The AAHC is a non-profit association dedicated to advancing the nation's health and well-being through the vigorous leadership of academic health centers.
