AAA Michigan Encourages House Members to Pass Ban on Texting While Driving as Primary Offense

DEARBORN, Mich., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- AAA Michigan today (April 19) called on members of  the Michigan House to amend their vote passing legislation that  would ban all motorists from sending and reading text messages while driving in Michigan.  The vote was approved as a secondary measure, meaning police could only enforce it if drivers are pulled over for something else.  Following the House vote, the bill was sent to the Senate – where it passed as a primary offense.  Now the House must take up the bill again.

AAA Michigan encourages the House to strengthen the bill and pass it as primary enforcement.  The vote would bring the state another step closer to a ban on texting while driving.  Governor Jennifer Granholm has indicated she will sign the legislation.

AAA Michigan strongly supports a text-messaging ban and continues to work in hopes of it being passed as a primary enforcement offense.  "Text messaging is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do behind the wheel of a moving vehicle," said AAA Michigan Traffic Safety Manager Jack Peet. "Yet, many surveys show that an alarming number of drivers do it. "

AAA Michigan is joining AAA clubs nationwide in a campaign to pass laws in all 50 states to ban drivers from text messaging.

AAA Michigan encourages drivers to contact their representatives and express support for a text messaging ban which would include making the law a primary enforcement issue.
