AAA: Gas Prices Continue to Rise Across Illinois and Indiana

AURORA, Ill., April 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Gas prices continued to rise in March and both Illinois and Indiana were among the states with the largest price increases over the previous month. Illinois and Indiana drivers are currently paying on average $3.76 and $3.71 respectively for a gallon of regular unleaded. These prices reflect a rise of over $.25 from just a month ago and are also the highest daily average since September 2013 (Illinois) and July 2013 (Indiana).   

In March in Illinois, gas prices averaged $3.74, which was up $.26 from February 2014 and $.11 less than a year ago. In northern Indiana, gas prices averaged $3.64 in March, which was up $.27 from February and down $.14 from March 2013.

In April, two refineries in Illinois and one in northern Indiana will be undergoing seasonal maintenance, which may cause a disruption in prices. These refineries should complete their maintenance by the end of April, which should allow gasoline supply to build before the summer driving season.   

"Spring is the most frustrating time of year for drivers given that gas prices seem to jump every time you get in the car," said Beth Mosher, AAA spokeswoman. "We are seeing the same seasonal hikes this spring, but fortunately gas is not nearly as expensive as in recent years."

Other March monthly averages across the region:

  • In Cook County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.96, which is up $.28 from last month and $.11 lower than last year's price-per-gallon.
  • In DuPage County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.81 per gallon, which is a $.26 increase from February and down $.10 from last year.
  • In Kane County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.79 per gallon, which is up $.27 compared to last month and $.10 lower than March 2013's price.
  • In Lake County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.79 per gallon, which is $.29 higher than last month and down by $.09 compared to this time last year.
  • In McHenry County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.81 per gallon, which is $.28 higher than last month's average and $.06 lower than March 2013's price.
  • In Will County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.77 per gallon, which is $.27 higher compared to last month and $.11 lower compared to last year.
  • In Champaign County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.64 per gallon, an increase of $.21 from February and $.06 lower than last year.
  • In McLean County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.58 per gallon, which is $.23 higher than last month and $.04 lower than last year.
  • In Peoria County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.62 per gallon, which is up $.25 compared to last month and down $.10 from March 2013.
  • In Sangamon County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.61 per gallon, which is $.04 higher than last month and $.36 lower than last year.
  • In Winnebago County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.39 per gallon, an increase of $.25 from February and $.10 lower than March 2013.
  • In Allen County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.66 per gallon, which is $.21 higher than last month and $.03 lower than March 2013's price.
  • In Lake County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.64 per gallon, which is up $.27 from February's average and is a $.14 decrease from a year ago.
  • In Porter County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.63 per gallon, which is $.27 higher than last month and $.13 lower than last year.
  • In St. Joseph County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.70 per gallon, which is $.24 higher compared to last month and $.06 lower with last year.
