OCEANSIDE, N.Y., April 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- David Miller, known for his trademark handlebar mustache, signature bowties and natural exuberance, is a man on a mission. A passionate philanthropist, he is taking his efforts to the next level, vanity aside. There's now a price on his head and his face to benefit children with cancer and their siblings.
David has been involved since 2007 with Sunrise Day Camp-Long Island, a proud member of the Sunrise Association of which David is currently a board member. The Association's mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings world-wide, through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, Year-Round Programs and In-Hospital Recreational Activities, all offered free of charge.
It's almost impossible to say no to David. He has built a reputation of putting pressure on his friends and colleagues to dig into their pockets in support of his pet charity. "David is relentless. At first glance he looks like a funny guy trying to make conversation, next thing you know he's holding your hand and helping you sign the check …," says Raymond Y. Davoodi, Co-Founder of Sharestates.
At a recent Sunrise men's committee meeting, David stood before a crowd of affluent local businessmen and pressed them to contribute and tap into their social networks in support of Sunrise. Michael Ramin, a partner in the firm, decided to give David a taste of his own medicine by challenging him to cut off his trademark mustache in exchange for a $10,000 donation.
Michael and Raymond were not going to let David say no. Together they have pledged $50,000 dollars if Mr. Miller would shave off not only his handlebar mustache, but also shave his head. They got the idea from other prestigious charities such as The St. Baldrick's Foundation, which encourage people to shave their heads as an act of solidarity for cancer patients.
In his typical style David saw this as an opportunity to raise even more money. Together, David, Raymond and Michael have launched a crowdfunding campaign, challenging others to step up and double their pledge. "I would do almost anything for these kids," says Mr. Miller, but my stash is part of my identity… and anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I am a 'little' vain. I can't imagine myself bald… for that $50,000 is simply not enough…if we can raise $100,000 I will do it."
Michael and Raymond along with their firm are hosting a poker night to benefit Sunrise on April 25th at Temple Emanuel in Great Neck, NY and plan to encourage attendees to step up in support of this challenge. If they are successful in raising $100,000, David will let them take it all off in front of the crowd at the 11th Annual Friends of Sunrise Cocktail Party and Auction, on May 4th at Glen Head Country Club, at which David is the MC and auctioneer.
To contribute to this campaign you can make a donation through Shave4Sunrise. If you can't attend the event but want to witness this act of solidarity it will be broadcast on Facebook live.
