SEATTLE, Oct. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Seattle-based Inspirus Credit Union is giving $80,000 to education throughout the month of October.
The credit union is giving $50,000 to teachers through classrooms grants, along with an additional $30,000 that will go towards purchasing coats and warm clothing for underserved students to wear during the winter months.
"It's givebacks like this that go to the core of our mission at Inspirus," said Inspirus Credit Union President Scott Adkins. "We believe that when we support students and teachers in education, we can create an environment where learning will thrive."
With nearly 80,000 members in the credit union, Inspirus plans to give $1 to education for each credit union member during the month of October. Inspirus has given approximately $400,000 to support education initiatives across the state this year.
To kick-off the campaign, Inspirus Credit Union fully-funded 11 education requests from teachers at Mount Vernon High School, with some help from Washington State Teacher of the Year Robert Hand.
"I'm thankful to work with so many amazing teachers who do everything they can every day to support every kid," said Hand.
Classroom grants at Mount Vernon supported microscopes for veterinary science students to get first-hand clinic experience, and circuit electronic kits for students to explore the world of light, sound, movement, and robotics.
Throughout the month of October, Inspirus will fund classroom grants across the state that support the following school subjects:
- Art
- Science
- Math
- Financial literacy
- Warmth, care, and hunger
All three Inspirus branch locations are public drop-off sites accepting donations of gently-used winter clothing.
"Many students in our district come to school with holes in their shoes because their parents cannot afford to buy them new shoes," said Tukwila School District Communication Officer Rhonda Lee. "We're so thankful that Inspirus and the local community is helping keep our kids warm."
Inspirus is giving more than 300 coats to support students in the Tukwila School District. Additional coats will benefit students in the Bremerton and Spokane School Districts, for a total donation of more than 1,000 coats going to students in need this winter.
