SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- 6WIND, a high-performance networking software company, today announced benchmarks performed on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) ProLiant servers with Spirent load generators. The benchmark validates that 6WIND Turbo IPsec™ performance, measured with application traffic, can cost-effectively scale to enable all size IPsec Gateways. IPsec is a necessary security technology for Cloud and Telecom Providers as it is used to create secure tunnels between trusted endpoints for services.
To meet small, medium, and large networks' encryption performance requirements, 6WIND's Turbo IPsec software solution on HPE ProLiant servers offers a cost-effective, flexible alternative to specialized, expensive IPsec Gateway hardware solutions. The same servers are available in configurations suitable for central office as well as data-center deployments, making them an ideal choice for Telcos who deploy the same capability in different environments.
6WIND Turbo IPsec is a software appliance that is designed for bare metal and virtual machine (VM) deployments to run on commercial off-the-shelf servers with performance that scales linearly with the number of cores. Application use cases for 6WIND Turbo IPsec running on HPE ProLiant servers include:
- Small Cell Gateways
- Telco, Enterprise WAN and Cloud Services
- Data Center Interconnects
- Secure Remote System Management
The benchmarks measured performance using Spirent test gear to generate HTTP traffic over IPsec with 6WIND Turbo IPsec running on HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen9 servers. "With the ability to create multi 10 Gbps of hyper realistic HTTP user traffic, Spirent's Avalanche™ solution proved the high performance characteristics of 6WIND's Turbo IPsec capabilities," said Scott Parcel, VP, Engineering and Products at Spirent Communications. "By using Spirent Avalanche testing solutions to achieve these benchmarks, 6WIND has demonstrated their market leading position for IPsec performance."
Benchmarks were conducted in an NFV (Network Function Virtualization) configuration with 6WIND Turbo IPsec deployed as a VM leveraging 6WIND Virtual Accelerator™, which is hypervisor acceleration software. The server under test was comprised of four Intel® Xeon® E7-8890 v3 CPUs (2.5GHZ) with 18 cores each and eight Mellanox 40 gigabit Ethernet NICs.
6WIND Turbo IPsec Benchmarks: Throughput for All Size Security Requirements
- 134 Gbps of secure application traffic (AES 256-bits + MD5) sustained at 75% of CPU utilization
- 34 cores for 6WIND Turbo IPsec VMs
- 24 cores for 6WIND Virtual Accelerator in the hypervisor
- 14 cores available on the server for additional services
- 4.2 Gbps per core
- Performance scales linearly with number of cores
- Add cores for throughput requirements
"IPsec gateways are critical technology for Telecom service providers and enterprises who want to offer secure connectivity services to their customers," said Claus Pedersen, Director of Telecommunication Infrastructure and NFV, HPE Servers. "Combining 6WIND Turbo IPsec with Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Telco ready ProLiant servers gives our customers network ready solutions for encryption that scale cost effectively from the lowest to the highest performance requirements."
"6WIND Turbo IPsec on HPE ProLiant servers is less than 1/2 the price per Gbps of encrypted traffic versus specialized hardware," said Eric Carmès, CEO and Founder of 6WIND. "Together, 6WIND software and HPE servers make network security affordable and scalable for all size networks."
On March 9 at 8 am Pacific Time, Light Reading will offer a Webinar to discuss HPE and 6WIND's joint IPsec solution and use cases. More information will be available at Mobile World Congress, February 22 – 25 in Barcelona, at 6WIND's stand in Hall 5, 5H18.
