SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- 6WIND, a high-performance networking software company, today announced an upgrade to its OpenStack NFV Test Drive platform on Advantech servers comprising 40 GE wire speed connectivity on Ubuntu OpenStack compute nodes. The new compute nodes are fully integrated into the existing OpenStack environment delivering a choice of OpenStack distributions and 10/40 GE connectivity. The NFV Test Drive platform includes 6WIND Virtual Accelerator™ which delivers wire speed performance and resource optimization for KVM hypervisors.
Network Operators, Application Vendors and Integrators can now test drive their software applications, deployed as virtual machines on OpenStack compute nodes that are configured with 6WIND Virtual Accelerator, and observe increased forwarding performance across 10 or 40 GE networks.
Hypervisor bottlenecks reduce software application performance, slowing adoption of NFV and limiting the scale of data centers beyond 10G. 6WIND Virtual Accelerator accelerates Open vSwitch within OpenStack deployments without disrupting the KVM hypervisors, SDN Controllers or other management functions. Network Operators leverage 6WIND Virtual Accelerator to scale and optimize system resources providing virtual applications with bare metal performance without resorting to hardware workarounds such as SR-IOV or PCI passthrough that break virtualization.
6WIND Virtual Accelerator enables high performance OpenStack NFV infrastructure with the following key features:
- Mature solution for high performance I/Os leveraging DPDK, with multi-vendor NIC support
- Accelerated virtual switching (Open vSwitch and Linux bridge) and networking (Overlays, Filtering/NAT, IP Forwarding, IPsec)
- Supports existing workloads through standard Virtio drivers
- Scalable software-based switching enables Service Chaining
"As virtual machine per server density rises, so does the need for extra network capacity," said Ween Niu, VP and General Manager, Advantech Networks and Communications Group. "With today's announcement both operators and VNF vendors alike can take a qualified step up in network performance while leveraging the full benefits of Ubuntu OpenStack and 6WIND virtual acceleration."
"Performance is a critical consideration when transitioning to virtual applications," said John Zannos, Vice President - Alliances, Canonical. "We are pleased to partner with 6WIND and Advantech to offer customers a 40G NFV Test Drive Platform for performance evaluation on Ubuntu OpenStack with native Open Virtual Switch using model-driven deployment based on Canonical's Juju and Charms."
"Our new NFV Test Drive platform release adds Ubuntu OpenStack with 40 GE connectivity, giving users more options to test high performance NFV Infrastructure for their virtual applications," said Eric Carmès, CEO and Founder of 6WIND. "Combining 6WIND with OpenStack shows immediate benefits in the transition to NFV by delivering bare metal performance for virtual applications without added complexity."
The new platforms are available today for remote evaluation, allowing developers to test 40 GE performance on the latest networking gear from Advantech and get a head start towards a deployable solution.
