68% of Hiring Managers Say AI-Powered Fraud Is Outpacing Detection, Checkr Report Finds

Despite increased fraud prevention efforts, employers remain focused on pre-hire screening, leaving a critical blind spot after employees join.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Checkr, the AI-powered verification platform for high-stakes decisions, today released The Hiring Hoax 2026: Fraud Doesn't End at the Offer, its second annual report examining how artificial intelligence is enabling identity fraud and candidate deception in hiring. Based on a survey of 3,000 U.S. managers involved in hiring, the report found that 40% have interviewed a candidate later found to be using a fake identity, up from 31% in 2025. Meanwhile, formal fraud training among HR teams has risen from 17% to 71%, yet just 23% of managers are extremely confident their hiring process would catch a fraudulent candidate.

The findings point to a growing disconnect between employers' efforts to combat fraud and their confidence in catching it. The data also highlights a critical blind spot: the risk doesn't necessarily end when a candidate is hired.

"AI is changing the nature of hiring fraud. Employers can no longer assume that a polished resume, a convincing interview or a seemingly valid identity tells the whole story," said IIan Frank, chief product officer at Checkr. "Fraud doesn't end at the offer. Companies need to verify who they're onboarding and keep earning that trust by protecting their systems and data as employees gain access."

Key findings from The Hiring Hoax 2026 include:

• The trust gap is widening. Sixty-eight percent of managers believe candidates are better at faking their identities with AI than companies are at detecting them, up from 62% in 2025. Sixty percent say AI has made virtual interviews harder to trust, compared with 51% last year.
• The risk extends beyond the offer. Thirty-eight percent of managers suspect a fraudulent employee is already working at their company undetected. While 63% of organizations focus fraud prevention primarily on the pre-hire stage, just 6% prioritize post-hire prevention.
• Hiring pressure can override scrutiny. Twenty-eight percent of managers have knowingly advanced a candidate despite suspecting dishonesty because they needed to fill the role quickly. Meanwhile, 65% have uncovered candidates who misrepresented their skills or experience, up from 60% in 2025.
• Dual employment raises questions about post-hire oversight. Fifty-eight percent of managers believe an employee at their company is currently working another full-time job, and 29% have confirmed at least one such case.
• More investment hasn't translated into confidence. Sixty-two percent of organizations use third-party background checks to combat fraud, up from 53% in 2025. Yet only 23% of managers are extremely confident their hiring process would catch a fraudulent candidate, highlighting a persistent gap between investment in fraud prevention and perceived effectiveness.

The findings underscore the need for employers to rethink how they establish and maintain trust across the employee lifecycle. As AI makes it easier to fabricate credentials, impersonate candidates and misrepresent identity, employers must look beyond individual screening steps to verify that the person being evaluated is who they claim to be. That scrutiny must continue after the offer, when employees gain access to company systems, sensitive data and intellectual property. Yet employers remain least prepared for fraud at this stage.

Checkr recently launched its Fraud Detection Suite to help employers catch sophisticated hiring fraud, including AI-generated resumes, deepfakes and identity misuse.

"I've seen a noticeable increase in AI-generated resumes, including applications that use nearly identical language, formatting and accomplishments," said Brittany Nguyen, talent recruitment specialist at Oklo. "While AI can be a helpful tool for legitimate candidates, it can also be used to exaggerate qualifications or fabricate work histories. Employers need to remain vigilant and strengthen verification processes to distinguish authentic candidates from fraudulent ones and protect the integrity of hiring."

Methodology
The Hiring Hoax 2026: Fraud Doesn't End at the Offer is based on an online survey of 3,000 U.S. adults who identified themselves as managers and had been involved in hiring within the previous 12 months. The survey was conducted through a third-party platform from Sept. 11–16, 2026.
