DALLAS, June 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A May 2016 HealthMine survey of 750 wellness program participants found that the majority (62%) think all members of their health plan should join a wellness program. What's more, 47% of respondents believe that if wellness programs had 100% participation, their own healthcare costs would go down. These findings come on the heels of new federal EEOC rules that clarify employers' ability to reward wellness program participation.
Wellness participants believe programs are helping them manage their health:
- 62% said their wellness program helped them lower their healthcare costs
- 38% said their wellness program helped them take fewer sick days
- 33% said their wellness program helped them be more productive at work
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) final ruling on wellness programs illuminates the boundaries around participation and financial rewards connected to these programs. The new law allows employers to offer members financial incentives worth up to 30% of individual health insurance premium costs, provided programs are voluntary and follow protections for employees against discrimination. HealthMine survey findings indicate that employees not only want these incentives themselves, but also feel that increased participation among colleagues will benefit everyone.
Bryce Williams, CEO and President of HealthMine said, "Healthier populations carry less risk, have fewer claims and lower premiums. So, it's true that wellness programs have the potential to improve health and lower costs for the entire population, one person at a time. The benefits of successful wellness programs are cumulative."
